The Impact of Media and Technology in Education

The educator’s role as a “personal educator” of people studying through media and technology, in which teachers serve as figures who supplement the computer by providing the pupil with personal attention through personal involvement and one-on-one interpersonal contact, they are the knowledge source to the learners. Therefore, one of their objectives is to provide proper education to complement and supplement effective learning of the students. They should acquire the skills of being flexible in terms of using media and technology for education in their teaching method.

Teachers must use and create particular instructional materials in order to make learners’ learning experiences more tangible and realistic. These instructional aids assist teachers in clarifying, establishing, and correlating learners’ conceptions. It also aids in the meaningful teaching of abstract topics (Naz & Akbar, 2008). The age, emotional and social development, and skill level of the students for whom the materials are chosen should all be considered while developing instructional media without feeling stressed or having too much pressure and learn in their own pace while being comfortable. And also ensures that the acquired knowledge is retained for a longer period of time. It should be aimed to encourage students to analyze their own attitudes and actions, as well as to understand their own roles, responsibilities, rights, and privileges as active participants in a diverse society.

Ejournal1: Technology and Media at the other side of the world

As I was thinking what to write on this week’s ejournal, I randomly saw the Ghanaian Teacher who patiently drew the actual screen of Microsoft word that makes him viral in 2018. He drew the MS screen to let his students familiarize with the technology furthermore, due to lack of access to different technology the chalk and board media was being used as a form of teaching platform. This only show that technology has bigger role in every countries lives particularly in education sector.

Based on our readings the application of technology and media will support teaching and learner so that student will transform from student-centered to knowledge explorers, translate textbook knowledge into new exciting presentations using different technologies (D. Ignazio, 1990c). They may be limited on the instructional materials or experiential learning but will surely they are satisfied with what they have to reach their goal. Undeniably they are one of the third world countries that are lack with technologies. However, those efforts and dedication coming from teachers is being recognized by the Microsoft company and received donation from them like laptop, projectors, mathematical sets and printer. This is not just about technology, the highlight of the story was the significant effort educators to meet the learning needs and objective of a learner. Those drawings has been the most unforgettable teaching learning strategy. This will always be remembered especially what they have learned all the time.

Remember that technology is a tool. It doesn’t replace good teaching   – Ann Jenks

Planning Health Education Programs

For a flawless execution of a Health Education Program these are to be considered: Identifying Priority Health Issues, Health Education/Promotion Program Planning through the use of PRECEDE-PROCEED model or MAPP (Mobilizing for action through Planning and partnership)

Identifying the priority health issues according to (pdhpe.net. (2015), includes social justice principles, priority population groups, prevalence of condition, potential for prevention and early detection and cost to the individual and community. So, why is it important to prioritize? In our resource material, it is important to prioritize to have equity and diversity and decision-making in creating healthy option, knowing the different priority groups, percentage of people with disease number of cases, what to do to reduce the disease and how to prevent that will ensure that right health program will be given. This also include how will it affect money, employment, social activity, mental health, family, friends, work, think all people around them. These factors have a large effect of an individual to be considered to improve their health, cost effective and have a supportive environment.

PRECEDE-PROCEED on the other hand discusses about (1) social assessment, (2) epidemiological assessment, (3) behavioral and environmental assessment, (4) educational and ecological assessment, and (5) administrative and policy assessment. The last four comprise implementation and evaluation of health promotion intervention. These include: (6) implementation, (7) process evaluation, (8) impact evaluation, and (9) outcome evaluation.

My realization about planning Health Promotion and Education is very tedious, takes a lot of time, effort and resource to establish a program. Thorough Planning and assessment for an effective implementation to support these health program. People’s input and involvement will give the individual to take part on the process program, identification their needs, formulation of needed interventions and recommended programs that will not just benefit the individual but also the community itself. Behind successful program are people who put their knowledge, share the same passion to help not just a specific person but on all walks of life so that they can enjoy the life that they deserve and wished for.

Health Education Approaches

Health Education Approaches are target, goals and objectives and approaches.  Health education strategies and activities should coincide to target audience for it is essential for healthcare educators and health experts to understand the background of the audience prior conducting a health education or implementing a program. Knowing the right and specific approach will help the community change their behavior towards misinformation of misconceptions to have healthy lifestyle.

Conferring to the example given on my reflection for Ejournal 2. Health education activities are expected to reduce the underlying risk factors and maintain the health of community, every individual and people in the community are the appropriate targets of health education on the misuse of herbal medicines and unapproved medicine by FDA and DOH.  On the individual level, giving the right information that not all herbal medicine are supplementary drugs to cure COVID- related symptoms.  Group and Community members as described by Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Ministry of Health. (2011) is a collection of people who have a feeling of belonging and share common culture, beliefs, values and norms. Gathering people or conducting a medical talk by a medical expert will help them increase their knowledge if a drug is approved by FDA and DOH, if this has undergone rigid testing and for public consumption unless prescribed by a doctor and adverse effects if taken inappropriately. With the widespread of technologies, information dissemination can be done on Zoom meetings, infographics, news and other social media platforms. With the right information people will posting fake news and consumption of the said drugs.

However, there are limitations in conducting series of seminars of talk for they may not reach the rural areas that is why government and DOH will play an important role by taking the responsibility on how to control the distribution on local areas, importation, exportation, advertisement is also subject for FDA approval. Intervention of fake news on social media platform should be also be taken into consideration to reach the target participants to attain ultimate goal healthy and informed lifestyle.

Individuals of the community should be responsible enough to achieve a healthy practices while medical experts like doctors, community health educators and practitioners are there to educate and inform that will improve their overall health.

COVID-19 has significantly impacted millions of people from frontliners, rich or poor as well as oldies all over the world. Common symptoms such as coughing, high fever, diarrhea, colds, difficulty in breathing, sore throat. Some people experience loss of taste and smell, tiredness, chest pain.

There was this controversy spreading in news and social media about Lianhua Qingwen (LHQW) and Ivermectin. Lianhua Qingwen (LHQW) capsule is known Chinese herbal medicine and widely used in China. DOH make a statement to the public that LHQW is not a registered as COVID- 19 medicine. Studies in China claim that it can cure influenza and certain condition of SARS. Some clinical trials said that LHQW showed improvements on patients suffering from pneumonia, flu virus, common colds that is why it has been recommended as treatment of COVID-19 in China. According to DOH, LHQW is harmful for people with medical pre-existing condition so that doctors can monitor underlying condition. That is why the use of LHQW is only allowed with medical Doctor’s prescription and supervision. Moreover, doctors also advice that this drug is for symptomatic treatment with COVID to help the body get through with the symptoms.

On the other hand, another drug which is Ivermectin according to DOH is registered product for veterinary use for internal and external parasites, heartworm diseases in animals.  First, Trials shows that it has not significantly reduce the risk of mortality with mild to severe threat of Covid-19 patients. Second, not associated with a definite benefit such as clinical improvement. Third, did not significantly reduce the period of hospitalization. And Lastly, Rate of hospitalization discharge did not differ significantly.

This module discusses about the five levels of ecological Model of health promotion includes intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional factors, community factors and Public Policy. The dynamic relationship of environment.

It is but important that health education and promotion strategies to change people’s health behavior toward a healthy life. It is significant that at the intrapersonal level, they will be able to be fully informed and knowledgeable on the medicines that they will be taking. While Interpersonal level, formal and informal social network is also important, example of this is getting enough information from doctors. For now, since almost all of essential workers like me who still not vaccinated, we make sure that we adhere and follow the proven protocols and continue being vigilant in protecting health and safety and that of your co-workers and families by avoiding social activities, maintain one-meter social distance, wear your facemask and face shield, and wash hands frequently. But I hope everyone will get their dose of vaccine instead of taking unprescribed medicines.

Government on the other hand should ensure to conduct an information campaign for proper dissemination of different drugs. Programs and Promotion activities that government can consider is through webinars and talk with medical practitioners that can be implemented. This way general public will be well-informed and correct the all drugs misconceptions. Public Policy should also open on the general information needed by the public.

Health is way beyond being healthy

What is health? What is wellness? These questions many of us struggle to find the right answer to this. I ask 5 of my coworkers that does health and wellness to them but only 2 of them responded to my question. One defines health is wealth and the other Health is the condition of body and the mind. A healthy person is someone who is free of any kind of disease. I would characterize myself as not healthy because I do not feed myself with the right amount and variety of food for my whole body to function well.

Reading all the resources on Topic 1 makes me understand the 3 different models of health- medical, holistic and wellness. I prefer the wellness and holistic model.

Going through WHO definition of “health is state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” this probably the reason why no single all encompassing definition of health is suffice enough to cover the whole concept of health.

If you were to ask my coworkers and say something about me, they would say in unison – that I am a busy person and that I am a workaholic person. “Work is my life”. I became a slave of work back then. I go to work 8:00 in the morning and go home 11:00 in the evening. That has been my daily routine, until one day, my right foot got swollen after having a body massage on one of the Spa Clinic. Despite swollen foot I still manage to go to work, then a friend of mind told me to go see a doctor. At first, I was hesitant to see a doctor because I am scared what the Doctor would say to me. So, I was diagnosed with tendonitis- it is an inflammation or irritation of the tendon. The doctor gave me 2 option, first is an oral medicine but it will take days to see the result, second option is injectable steroid which he said that it is the best option and to lessen the inflammation faster chances of recovery compared to oral medication. Having no knowledge on medicine, I chose steroid because I really wanted to walk again and do my daily routine. Getting an injection, I think that was the most excruciating pain I had ever experience in life, aside from the fact that I have a low tolerance in pain. And then, I’m back to my old self again after two weeks, but after a few months, the same foot got swollen again. So, off I went to see a Ortho Doctor, he then advise me to go to see a RA Doctor or a Rheumatologist. Unfortunately, there are only few RA Doctor in Pampanga and that I have to make an appointment. So, I asked my father if we have a family history of Rheumatism or Arthritis and I was so shocked my grandmother and some of my Uncles on Father side had an Arthritis.

At some point depression has become my friend. I felt so down, despair, disappointed and even frustrated and that made me ask, why is has to be me? I would often wake up 3am and I can no longer bring back to sleep. Those where my darkest probably because I think too much. Comes the day of checkup, it went well however the Doctor does not want to confirm it yet   and that I have to go to series of test and up to now, I am still under monitoring. Probably, that experience was my wake-up call.

For me, my definition of Health and wellness system now after reading the resources plus my experiences is Holistic. It is not just physical that matters but also mental, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual or the 8 Dimension of wellness. Health & Wellness for me is one who achieves a good balance among all these aspects, where each aspect gets sufficient attention to not cause stress. I would like to think I have more balanced days than not so overall, I’m healthy. In terms of Physical: I work out 3x a week, eat healthy, stay active, no illnesses. Mental: I try to be positive and look at the brighter side of things. And let go of the things that we cannot control. Emotional: I really try to be patient, not get angry quickly, and consider other’s Point of View and respect different opinions. Social: travel (when we can), text friends and family, have dinner with friends.  Intellectual: attend training, conferences, read books, tackle problems, learn new skills. Spiritual: pray daily, hear the mass, read the Bible, meditate and reflect. I don’t always succeed but hopefully I’m progressing and manage to move that balanced stick a bit better each time.

Health is beyond the anatomical and physiological perspective, it is more than being free from illnesses. Life is too short to be confined on the illnesses and that we have to always choose to be happy.

Final Entry: True Essence of Educational Multimedia Material

Hats off to all of us!! Amidst this uncertainties we were able to come this far. As  I was writing this Final ejournal it brings back to the memory on what is Multimedia Design and what is its’ role to improve learning. These words are still very vivid on my mind – educational multimedia design is a combination of pedagogical principles and art of combining all forms of media materials. It is an integration of text, audio, video, computing, and social media platform.

I was in the verge of giving up creating my Final EMM, it was no joke. I know everybody can relate to this. It’s very frustrating that when you are in front of your laptop and nothing would come out from your head. I have to divert my attention into something that I thought would help me give an idea what to do but it gets you even more frustrated. What has motivate me to complete my EMM and move forward…is the support system of our classmates which I am very grateful about. They are just one message away and they had full heartedly give you their guidance and brilliant ideas.

If you were to ask what is the most challenging part in making a EMM, For me, that would be whole process. What I learned from FEA are Audience, situation, technology , media , task and objective analysis. Sir Ley kept on telling that what will be my learning objective, what is aligned on MELC, how will I gain the attention of my learner, will they like it, that I have to consider my target  learner – that I should not be concentrating on just one particular type of learner .because I will not beside the them when they will start using it. Now I understand why they should be considered in making an EMM.  Then comes the design stage wherein what would be the content of my EMM, again I have to go back to what was discussed in Module 7 regarding the integration of image, text, sound, video and graphics. Again I have to consider the elements and Principles of Design such as color, shape, size, texture, emphasis, proportion, unity and movement. Not to mention constant consultation with Sir Ley.  First, I tried the scratch but I need more time to learn on the codes and then I tried exploring PowToon and Viola! I was able to come up with a 3 minute short video to add to my EMM. That makes a “Add to list” as my new learnings and an opportunity to learn new skills.

Field Testing phase or should I say the moment of truth, I am excited but at the same time very nervous and my anxiety level is so high because I have so many “what ifs” in my mind. Evaluation and monitoring will be the deciding factor whether the EMM is effective or not and this will also a reflection on the strength and weakness of my designed EMM. And as to what Sir Ley’s advise, I should make sure that my designed EMM can stand- alone even without my guidance since this is a study-paced and that anybody can benefit from my designed EMM.

I know this is just the beginning of my exciting and challenging journey in making a Educational Multimedia Material. I hope and looking forward to learn from all of you again this coming term. Again, Agyamanak kadakayo amin!

EDS153:Module 8- Field-Testing & Evaluation of Educational Multimedia Materials (EMM)

Finally!! we had reach this far. The knowledge gain since day 1 up until Module 8 has helped me in the designing, creation, evaluation, modification and revision of my EMM. They are like the building blocks on my journey in making an effective EMM. But, I would like to focus on the significance of evaluation and monitoring in Multimedia Design.

In a flick of a finger we cannot say that the created MM is perfect, this needs to be reviewed by someone who is more knowledgeable so we can come up with a better idea and how to make our MM more effective. Thus, there is always a room for improvement. Second is that evaluation will be a big help to assess the strength and weaknesses of an instructional material. Meaning the gathered result from the evaluation of the project/EMM can be used as a reference on the development process of a team. This will help the designer on what aspect does he/she need to improve such as Knowledge and Skills to further improve his /her craftsmanship in the creation and design of EMM. Lastly, the significance of evaluation and monitoring is to gauge the performance of learner whether the instructional material has transpired into added knowledge or skills. This activity is done after try out of the newly designed EMM.

As an aspiring instruction designer like me, Evaluation and monitoring has to be continuous cycle, we have to be critical thinkers to address the needs and meet the learning objective of a learner. and giving summative or evaluation does not end there. we have to be innovative in making an effective EMM and taking advantage on the various technology platform so both the learner and educator will continue to learn and grow.

Pedagogical Integration of Multimedia

My take away on this module is that when making a multimedia material aside from integration of text, audio, video, computing and social media we should consider the cognitive objectives and learner’s level of comprehension in developing a multimedia material.

We all are aware that some learners are visual-spatial others are auditory that is why educator need to assess prior making a multimedia material. Taking for example our machine operators in the manufacturing line, they are required to take the training whenever we have a new machine. Its main objective is for the operator to know the step-by step of operating a machine and to be able to do that, SME /trainer use the computing approach to let the operator watch the tutorial in a form of text, audio and video so they can go over and watch the complicated steps several times.

Relating it to my EMM, now it’s clear to me on why Sir Ley kept on asking what is my learning objective, how to be able to get the attention of a learner, what is the format / content presentation, how it will be delivered, what is the learner’s interest and so and so forth. And as a future educator I have to keep that in mind in making a multimedia material.

Having that thought we can help students become more engaged, interactive, motivated boost their self-confidence to learn new things and become more critical thinkers to explore new things on their own which is the ultimate goal for 21st century learners in this digitalized world.
