I am very fortunate to have a role model and a mentor in my life, most especially in the middle of my ups and downs personal problems. There are a lot of people who would give their support and advices but few of them are willing to go beyond. These are the people who would tell you to do things in a proper way and would tell you straight when things don’t work out.

My Models and Mentors
List the most important role models and mentors in your life. Then describe what their positive modeling and mentoring have meant to your development.

Role Models and Mentors Their Contributions
My Mother Florencia She is my greatest teacher.  I am very sure she is indeed the foundation from which I have built my learning. Faith in God and respect to others are the greatest lesson I’ve learned from her.
My sister Joyce and LizHer engagement across a wide range of disciplines taught me that it is not about what the world has to offer, it is about what I can offer to the world. She would always encourage me to be more patient and continue to strive to pursue my dreams.
A Prof back in College Nearing his 50’s and having obtained a lot of academic credentials but still pursuing a lot of scholarly goals, he is showing that we should never stop learning.
My special friend Marc He pushed me to continue my studies despitemy busy schedules. He always there to remindme to follow my dreams- my dream of becoming a good educator. He is the one who motivates me to not give up when things go wrong. Iam very thankful for his unwavering love and support just like my parents.

The type of role model I want to be for others (other learners)
Describe which characteristics and behaviors you believe are the most important for you to model for your students.

One who has a broad coverage of knowledge but willing to honestly say if he does not know something
One who does not have to make his co-mentors inferior just to show off and prove his edge over the others
One who looks not only on the scores, but sees beyond that (was the student who did well on the test had a comfortable place to study last night, or did he do it despite having to go home late as a working student
One who is not afraid to commit mistake and learn from that mistake to strive more.
One who is responsible and very good in decision making and dependable

How I will incorporate models and mentors in my profession (as an educator)
Describe a systematic plan for bringing models and mentors into your students’ lives in one or more domain(s) you plan to teach, such as math, English, science, music, and so on.

As an educator, modelling is still the best tool to shape student’s behavior.  In modeling, student’s learning would be much easier by applying the modelling process which is the ARRM (Attention, Retention,Reproduction and Motivation) because the teacher will show them how to solve a problem then student will store that information and try to duplicate what was taught on them and lastly guide them and praise them for their showmanship. As an educator we should make them feel that we are always there for them every step of the way in order for them to be motivated so that in the future, they can be successful in life like others.  We cannot teach all the good values in life but making them feel that they need to equip themselves of being positive and optimistic on the things around them, then, they are most likely to become successful in all of their endeavors.

Who will be my education mentor? What would my ideal education mentor be like?
Do you have someone in mind who might serve as an education mentor when you become a teacher? If so, describe the person. What would your ideal education mentor be like?

I had a Humanities teacher- who has been so effective in teaching her subject. We did not have to learn the subject out of compulsion or fear but out of enjoyment. My ideal mentor is someone who goes beyond the textbooks and has the influence to say that to his students because that’s what education really is. She treat us not just a student but treat us as her own family. She makes us feel more comfortable the way she expound her teaching skills.

eJournal Update – Mod 4 Social Learning

“In order to succeed, people need a sense of self-efficacy, to struggle together with resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequities of life.”

Albert Bandura
  • How do your personal beliefs about you capabilities, both positive and negative, influence your motivations to learn?

I came from a poor family. My mother was able to finished her secondary school while my father was an undergraduate students in college. I only have three siblings who were able to finish their College. My family has been my backbone on my learning journey.  Being a full time worker and a student at the same time is a very challenging one. My motivation to continue my studies is to help my family, build my self-confidence, gain knowledge and be able to help the community. Embracing my challenges and having that strong self-determination and high self-efficacy will help me achieve my goal which to finish my College degree. I am so grateful that I continue my studies because I was able to develop my self-fulfilling prophecy. I had become more confident and positive in everything that I do.

  • What factors facilitated some behaviors that you (or a significant other person, say in your family) has essentially acquired through observation?

I truly admire my brother Raymund despite his failures from the past. I have seen him how he was determined to pursue his studies. No matter how difficult our life is, he is striving more to fulfill for his goals. With that determination that he is showing I should also need to possess that attitude to “Never stop believing never stop dreaming”. Conquering that greatest fear would always be my guiding path to make that dreams into reality. If he can do it, others can also do.

  • How could we use social learning to conserve our traditions?
On the other hand, how does social learning theory explain contemporary socio-cultural transitions?

Social learning is all about how people learned from others through observing others. It is the process of modelling, observing and imitating. For example, by showing them how to act, obey and do the ethical way to abide the law of God and law of the people. One of the family tradition or gesture is the “pagmamano” which up to this day this has been our practice and now being practiced by my nieces and nephews. This is a symbol of respect to elderly. Another tradition is going to church every Sunday. Me and the rest of the family went to the church every Sunday. This tradition and values will pass on from one generation to the next. By teaching the young ones the value of respect, trust and having a positive outlook they will most likely to succeed in life.

  • How should we utilize media and technology in the context of social learning?

Media and technology enhanced our teaching and learning skills which allow learners like me how to communicate easier and support our teaching and learning skills. These two are beneficial for everyone because it is the most prominent ways to engage and communicate with variety of groups. We can also utilize by sharing common values and goals Blog is one example of social media. A significant tool that students are using nowadays on their projects wherein they could blog about their experiences and share it, I sometimes call this as an online diary. But we have to be responsible, value and respect each other on the things we say and share on media.

Reflection on Intelligence

The discussion about intelligence is substantial that makes me rethink, terms that are new to me and discovered new learning. Intelligence can be defined in many different ways. It may be “the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge”, the capacity for logic, the ability to perceive and infer information, and so on. Intelligence can be a very subjective matter. Though, the importance of intelligence is one that everyone can agree on.

Let me just relate learning and intelligence to that of Finland’s education system from my previous subject.  Finland is known to be the best school. Children don’t receive formal academic training until they reach the age of seven. In day care, they learn through play, games and songs and discussion. Finland doesn’t waste time or money on low quality standardized test. Children are assessed through observation, quizzes and personalized learning device. They are even allowed to have fun, giggle and day dream. They put into practice the cultural mantra which is “let children be children” and “children learn best through play”.

With that kind of rich learning environment of Finland children will most likely develop their multiple intelligence and emotional intelligence. Children are more stress free because there are no IQ tests to track their performances and still they are on considered top performers in terms of statistics. My question now is, do you think we can adopt the way Finland’s way of teaching student?

eJournal Update – Mod 3-Down the Memory Lane

My childhood memories. I am really a very quiet type of a child living within very busy streets in Baguio. I remember when I was 10 years old, every time my mom got her “basket” I know she is ready to go to the market. So I would get up and prepare myself. Each morning my mom had to take me with her in the market. I was always excited to see lots of dolls everywhere in that area. So one day I asked mom if she can buy one for me and she did it. She bought the doll with one condition. I better take good care of my things because I can’t have anything I want. This piece of advice laid the foundations of my values, attitude, my beliefs and my character.

Though I used to be with my mom, I remember I’ve always wanted to be by my dad’s side. I could say, he is a disciplinarian dad but with a soft heart. My mom and dad thought me a lot, from washing the dishes to fold laundry. They had the best deal when I and my brothers want to play outside. Finish household chores and go!

Our parents always reminded us to love each other no matter how big or small the fight is. Perhaps sibling rivalry is normal. I can’t remember if my parents ever spanked us. A few slaps on our hands is enough for the wrong things we have done. Slaps makes us angry because we can’t do what we wanted to do for the moment. I believe that there is nothing wrong with slapping on the hands. Then he would ask us to re-think over our mistakes. They always emphasized us that they loved us. This was my parents approach same as B.F Skinner’s approach to correct our behaviors and to be responsible well-mannered child. Why would I angry to them? Our love for them never changed. Our parents provided a roof, a bed to sleep in and a food to survive.

My childhood experiences helped me to become the best version of myself. I improved sense of my responsibility and decision making. I see confidence in me because of my loved ones.  I know that living in a digital world where few of the parents, if any, are do not believe in this kind of punishment nowadays. There are some practices that I want to repeat with my own child in the future. Every parent is trying their best way to brings up their children to end up being a good member of the society. I would always cherish my childhood days!

eJournal Entry #2-Powerful Mindset

Like everything else under the sun, intelligence is important.

And so YES, I strongly believe that the theories about learning, intelligence and how important it is to us.

I should say it is the progress of human’s basic abilities and skills that spread outside narrow self-interest. A reality that holds true today until forever. Learning should be judged not only from the point of view, but from everyday experiences. It is a realistic move on the continuing evolution of learning formulation.  I agreed by telling intelligence benefits mankind, improves the life of the people.

It is quite interesting to note that IQ is most likely observed by the success of the people. However, I do not judge a person’s level of success; people may have been blessed in different ways. Anyways, the bottom line here is, regardless of what levels of intelligence, the most important thing is the type of ability to use their knowledge to achieve their goals.

I still don’t know a lot of things and I hope that the learning in this course and conversations with my classmates will help me perform my studies better.

How it will be relevant in my life and career? My realization is to learn everything I can from this course, which I can apply in my chosen career. I am a firm believer in lifelong learning, and I hope that I will not let myself down.

I know this particular activities will help me build more my knowledge on the technical aspect and definitely I will dedicate more time on reading, understanding modules and share information needed.

I would like to think that this course would benefit us especially in the education system. After this course, I hope to see more competent, professional and upright educator in the Philippines.

You may have something to share! I would be glad to know…

EDS 103 Journey

MODULE 1

It is easy enough for any rational individual to understand Learning. When we started doing our activities, we knew that the topics are complex and recursive process so we proceed to gathering more reading materials as additional supplements.

I learned that in Module 1 is all about experiences in life; things that we thought we knew but later on realized, we are still lack of knowledge. There is a great need to understand each one of us whether we want to learn something or not. I went through all the work of readings because I want to know the answer to my questions. The more you understand, the more you know where it is coming from. Now, we can ask, what is learning and what does it entail? What are theories and why is it important? What ate the other ways we conceive learning. What the distinction is between unlearned from learned? Why is it important to use a scientific theory -based approach to understand learning and the associated process and outcomes.

As I will explain, the whole modules had published a good introduction that we may want to explore other reading lists that will turn our heads up. As I have said in our recent forums, Learning is a process of expanding knowledge through our experiences in life. It is a development that builds our social and professional skills.

What we have learned is a result of our personal experiences. Our education is a big part of it so I believe we should also continue to share many of the information that will enhance the capabilities and skills of the people around us.

I came to differentiate between Leaning and not Learning, Learned and Unlearned. Learning is what we get from education, personal growth, from people we get to see and talk while not Learning is something that we are somewhat not are of or the inherent behavior that everyone has.

Learned and unlearned, these are the things that everyone has. Unlearned is inherent to a person while learned is an acquired behavior or knowledge through formal and informal education. For an instance, through education and through the guidance of our friends and families, we know what is right from wrong. From this, we are able to identify everything that comes our way whether it will be good or not.

However, I realized, it is more than knowledge against experiences. During my research on other reading materials, I could say that learning a continuous process. I guess there are many reasons why we need to understand it, and that is for our personal growth who will be the end benefit from these very informative modules. Finally it has become clear to me that the intention of this activity is not to question our self, but to create clear definitions of everything around us. It is our task to understand it so that we can further broadened our knowledge into something new.

With these activities, I made a strong communication regarding the topic that we need to be discussed. By having all of these, sense of accomplishments, others ideas, compliments other views and tried to come up that makes sense to the topic. The important aspect in this activity was the level of interactions. This is absolutely essential.
